University of Greenwich — a place to be
One of our advisors, whom we presented in one of our latest blog posts, visited Greenwich University in London. Stefan took a walk through the campus, made a tour and enjoyed everything the university has to offer.
“I had the opportunity to visit one of the OK Student University partners, University of Greenwich. I was welcomed by Natasha Abreo, an International Recruitment Officer for Europe who showed me around the Greenwich campus and introduced me to many exciting opportunities this university has to offer.
University of Greenwich has three campuses, Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway campus. I have visited the main, Greenwich campus and explored its buildings and academic schools. Greenwich campus is in south-east London just across the river Thames from Canary Wharf (finance centre), creating a spectacular view on massive skyscrapers. Campus buildings are part of UNESCO’s heritage site, making student life and hard-working periods much more pleasant and beautiful. Although this campus is in London, you do not get the feeling of “always busy and rushed” London. Occasional tourists and explorers of Greenwich museums, parks and observatory make this place sometimes crowded, but otherwise campus vibe is mostly student oriented. When you walk between campus buildings you can see students everywhere especially in the University’s Student Union. Current building of the SU used to be a library, but recently it was redesigned into a place where students can spend time and enjoy themselves in extracurricular activities such as sports, societies, etc. I was very impressed by the ground floor of the SU as it has everything one student might need. There is a cantina, Starbucks, SU Services and very beautiful balconies decorated with flags from countries students come from. On the ground floor there is also a section where students’ stories are presented about their experience at the University of Greenwich. Having a look at those stories you can see its diversity and multiculturalism.
What, how and why should you study at University of Greenwich?
There is a variety of courses you can study at this University. As previously mentioned, there are three campuses and courses differ at each one. Engineering, Business, Sciences are just some areas you can study, but there are many more. What impressed me the most is the connection of all three campuses. The University organised buses that connect all three campuses, which just proved the point Natasha gave — this University is a “student-focused” University. What does it mean “student-focused”? The answer to that question can be found by just walking around the campus! Happy students everywhere going to their lectures and finishing their assignments, laughing in the SU and feeling welcomed everywhere. Even the excitement about the sports varsity can be noticed by simply walking through the campus. It was such a relaxed atmosphere that makes student life more enjoyable. Nastasha also pointed out that lecturers are focused on their students, trying to make them the best candidates for jobs one day. Lecturers are dedicated to transfer their knowledge onto students and make them ready for the future career. Not only lecturers, but the whole University is investing their time into students which can be seen in the technology students can use, new resources, modern building and libraries, etc. University also provides accommodation close to campuses, so students do not need to worry about that, but can focus on their academia. This University is a “full-package” deal!!!
The first time I visited this University was back in 2013 when I was just a tourist willing to explore the history of Greenwich observatory and museums. In 2019, I attended a conference at the University and even then, with only a few hours spent there, it gave a special feeling about this place. Now, knowing what University of Greenwich offers, I would advise everyone to check the opportunities here and to consider coming to this amazing University!”
